NWU athletes and staff join 2026 Commonwealth Games

Five current NWU athletes, two alumni and two staff members are involved in the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

North-West University has athletes, alumni and staff taking part in the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow from 23 July to 2 August.

Current NWU representatives include Bradley Nkoana in South Africa's 4x100 m relay, Rogail Joseph in the 400 m hurdles, Franco le Roux in the 110 m hurdles and Liezel Gouws in para-athletics. Ethan Olivier is representing New Zealand in the men's triple jump.

NWU alumni Waldouw Smit and Jo-Ané du Plessis were selected for South Africa in the men's and women's javelin events. Athletics manager Tracey Olivier and coach Shaun Bownes are serving in Team South Africa's management structure.

Nkoana entered the Games after running 9.95 seconds for the 100 m in Belgium on 27 June, becoming the 12th South African sprinter to break 10 seconds. Joseph arrived as the reigning African champion in the 400 m hurdles.
