The NWU Botanical Garden is one of Potchefstroom's easiest low-cost outings: it is inside town, open to the public on weekdays and small enough to explore without turning the visit into an all-day expedition.

Make the visit more interesting
Look for the garden's tree route and the Byderhand Garden Verses experience. The poetry project pairs writing, visual art and digital material accessed at points in the garden, adding a cultural layer to the plant collections.
Bring earphones if you want to use the digital poetry elements without disturbing other visitors. The garden is also a useful starting point for beginner birdwatching, especially during quieter morning hours.

The garden asks groups and school groups to arrange their visits in advance. Its visitor information also states that photo shoots are not allowed, so treat this as a visit rather than a portrait or commercial photography location.
